Your newborn photo session is fast approaching, you’re excited but apprehensive about what to expect from your session. You ask yourself an abundance of questions like; “what do I need to bring?” “what if my baby doesn’t sleep through the session?” along with a host of other questions.
Fear not, for I am here to shed a little light on your session. As a photographer specialising in newborn photography here in Northern Ireland I can share some of the best tips to help your newborn session run smoothly.
I find that most of my clients are expecting their little one to sleep through the whole photo session. I can assure you that this is not the case for the majority of new babies. Once in a blue moon I will encounter a golden baby who sleeps through their whole portrait session. This is not a normal occurrence, so please do not worry if your little one is not a big sleeper.
Part of the reason your newborn session is 3 hours long is because it can take a while for your new baby to drift off. I use a host of techniques for baby soothing, but here are a few tips that you may find useful to help prepare you for your newborn photo shoot.
Tip one
Full bellies
This one may be common knowledge to you, but it is important to highlight it. Feeding your baby just before we start the session is a perfect way to help make your little one sleepy. You can feed your baby when you get into the studio so that we start the session with a full belly.
Tip two
Changes & feeds
It is surprising how often a little one can need a feed or a nappy change in a warm room over the 3 hours. Be over prepared, make sure to pack enough nappies and food (if you are formula feeding) for over 3 hours.
Tip three
Bring a dummy!
This is probably one of my most important tips – a dummy can be a game changer for getting the image you want, especially if baby doesn’t like being fussed over. I encourage my clients to bring one along to their session. We may not need to use one, but I know that it makes a huge difference for these sessions.
