Hospital bag checklist – what to pack for you and your baby
Is your due date fast approaching? Are you in the midst of packing a hospital bag or looking for information on when and what to pack? Look no further! Whether you’re a first-time mum or welcoming another little one, this checklist will help you pack everything you need.
It is a good idea to pack your bag ahead of time – do this least 3 weeks before your due date and leave it somewhere handy and close to your front door for you or your partner to pick up when it’s time to go.
Essentials for Mum
1. Important documents
Hospital notes
Birth plan
2. Clothing
Loose-fitting nightwear – a button-up top is great for breastfeeding
A dressing gown & flipflops (flipflops are great for the shower!)
Comfortable maternity underwear & bras – nursing bras if you plan to breastfeed.
Socks
Loose & comfortable clothing – pack around 3 outfits just in case.
An extra outfit for going home
3. Toiletries & self-care
Toothbrush, toothpaste & deodorant
Hairbrush, hair bobbles & dry shampoo
Shower gel, face cloth, shampoo & conditioner
Face wipes & moisturiser
Any medication you are taking
Lip balm
Body lotion
Makeup bag
Hand sanitiser
Maternity pads
Breast pads & nipple cream
A spare bag for dirty washing
4. Labour & Birth Comforts
A pillow for extra comfort
An eye mask to help you sleep
Towels
Your favourite snacks
Drinks with electrolytes such as Lucozade sport
Water bottle – on with a straw might be useful
A fan or water spray to help keep you cool
TENS machine if using for pain relief – pack extra batteries!
Phone charger with an extra-long charging cable & a power bar
Download some podcasts/series/films onto your phone
Make a playlist of your favourite music
Books, magazines or a kindle
Essentials for Baby
1. Newborn Clothes
3–4 sleepsuits, vests & bodysuits
Scratch mittens, socks & a hat
A warm cardigan or jacket (depending on the time of year)
An outfit for going home
2. Baby essentials
Nappies
Cotton wool & wipes
Muslin cloths
A baby blanket for warmth
If you don’t plan to breastfeed, bring some formula
Car seat – test it out & fit it in your car before hand to save any stress.
Extras You May Want your partner to pack
Toiletries & spare clothes
Phone & charger
A camera
Snacks & drinks – so they don’t steal yours!
Swimwear is useful if they are getting in a birthing pool with you
Change for the car park & vending machines
