How to prepare for your pet photo session
You’ve just booked a pet photo shoot with me in my Ballygowan photography studio. You’re wondering where to start with preparing for the session. Look no further, I am here to deliver the goods! I have created this studio pet photography guide for a stress-free photo session.
A professional pet photo session with Amie McAllister Photography is a great way to document that sweet little face and capture their personality forever. A little bit of preparation beforehand can make a huge difference. This can help your session run smoothly and ensuring you get the best results from your investment. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your upcoming pet portrait session.
We want a calm environment for your pet, so that they are not feeling stressed. Pets are incredibly sensitive to their owner’s energy. If you feel calm and relaxed, your pet is far more likely to follow your lead. The studio environment is quiet and controlled, which helps pets settle quickly and feel safe.
What should I do before the shoot?
Grooming is my number 1 tip! Don’t worry if you haven’t booked them in for a full professional groom. Although, you do want them looking their best for their close up. It’s a great idea to book your pet photo session a few days after their next grooming appointment.
Before your session:
★Brush your pet to remove loose hair
★Wipe eyes and noses gently
★Trim around eyes if needed
A short walk before the session can help release excess energy for your dog without making them tired. Avoid feeding a full meal immediately before the session as treats will be used as positive reinforcement. I have treats in the studio but if your pet has specific treats they love, feel free to bring those along to your shoot.
For cats and smaller pets, keep routines as normal as possible before arriving at the studio.
What Should Your Pet Wear?
The golden rule; less is more. The main focus of studio pet photography should always be your pet’s expression and eyes. So ditch the outfits and let your furry family members shine naturally. I typically opt for a collarless image as it is timeless and helps to make sure there are no distractions in the final images. If you want a few photos with their collar on I would opt for a simple collar over a harness and I would try to avoid having any tags dangling from the collar.
Should I bring anything with me?
Even in a professional studio, familiar scents can be very reassuring. It is a great idea to bring some home comforts for your pets.
Consider bringing:
★Your pet’s favourite treats
★A small toy (especially for dogs)
★A blanket or item that smells like home
These can help with attention, comfort, and confidence during the session.
Trust the Process
Professional pet photography is not about forcing poses. It is very much pet led. When you arrive to the studio your pets will have the chance to sniff and take in their new surroundings.
These sessions are about patience, timing, and understanding animal behaviour. Some pets need a few minutes to settle, while others jump straight in. Both are completely normal. So don’t worry if you feel like we aren’t getting anywhere at first. I work with children and animals, so patience has to be high up on my priority list.
A studio pet photography session is more than just photos, it’s an experience to celebrate your pets and you will walk away with artwork for your home. Whether you choose to display your portraits on your walls or in an album, I can help tailor the photos to your needs.
